WHAT TO EXPECT FROM A NEWBORN SESSION

It’s no secret that my favorite color is green! So when I walk into a clients home who has decorated either their home or nursery in shades of green it instantly gives me warm happy vibes. Green is a very peaceful color to me especially in the winter time. When the day is cold, rainy or snowy outside, green makes me feel comfortable and makes the indoors feel like a piece of the outdoors. Green is a reminder of all seasons, spring blooms, summer grass, falling leaves, and pine trees in the snow. The calming feeling of earthy greens is great for nursey’s too! Giving it a sweet backdrop to your session. This momma decided to create a woodsy bear theme which was a perfect setting with her cozy little one. Thomas was not much bigger than his teddy bear and the sweet touches and love from his adoring parents made this such a fun & relaxing session. Nursery Design Studio is a great site for ideas for baby nursery rooms to make your space & images uniquely yours, which is impossible to recreate in a studio.

Here are a few tips in helping you prepare for a newborn session.

HOW TO PREP YOUR BABY

A newborn session is designed to be calm, not rushed, and centered around your baby & your family. The goal is to capture connections, tiny details of baby and the nursery. The best preparation is actually very simple.

  • Try and keep baby awake an hour before the session time. This will ensure baby will be calm and possibly sleeping so that the photographer can get a variety of images.
  • Feed your baby right before the session or as the photographer is arriving and setting up for the session
  • Keep them comfy in simple neutral onesie and loose blanket.
  • Don’t stress about schedules. I allow for many breaks, feeding, soothing and cuddles
  • A content baby will have peaceful still images, but awake moments will happen too and they allow for meaningful, engaging photos with mom and dad.

HOW LONG IS THE SESSION?

Lifestyle newborn sessions typically last about 1.5-2 hours. This allows plenty of time for:

  • Feeding and diaper changes
  • Snuggling and soothing
  • Natural moments without feeling rushed
  • Images of the nursery you lovinging decorated
  • Images with other children, while baby is on a break

STYLING THE SESSION AND WHAT TO WEAR

For this sweet session, Thomas’s parents opted for soft, neutral tones that complemented the nursery. Light, soft textures and simple white always photograph beautifully and keep the focus on baby. If you’re wondering what to wear for an in-home newborn session, keeping outfits simple and comfortable is key! Opt for earthy and light colors and knit textures photograph best. Minimal props keep the focus on your baby and connection. Your home, window light and personal style become part of the story. Every session is styled to feel timeless and true to your family.

THE BEAUTY OF A LIFESTYLE NEWBORN SESSION

  • Focus on real moments over posed perfection
  • Parents interacting naturally with their baby
  • Tiny details like fingers, toes, and maybe something personal of your babies
  • Adding in other children or family pets
  • These images tell the story of what life felt like in those first days… tender, emotional and fleeting.
